— In Tennessee, a program that has had a long history of recruiting top prospects in the state’s upper ranks has helped a new high school graduate become the first person in the country to recruit an incoming head coach.
The Tennessee program, the Tennessee Elite Program, has been recruiting for the last several years under head coach Kevin Sumlin, and when Sumlin arrived in Knoxville, he had a special opportunity to recruit a high school student.
Tennessee Elite Programs recruits at the Tennessee State University’s football and track and field teams and the state high school football championship team.
Sumlin said that when he arrived, the program had a pool of about 60 students.
That number has grown, and Sumlin hopes to have that number growing as he sees the program grow.
“When you recruit, it’s not just recruiting from your friends, it is recruiting from everybody that you can,” Sumlin told ESPN.
“So, I think that’s why it’s so exciting to see that it has become the next step for this program to grow and take the next level.”
After a couple of weeks of recruiting, Sumlin took a look at a couple high school students in Knoxvillians, and the former high school player, now in his 20s, was one of them.
It was not a simple decision.
The young man said he was excited to be in Tennessee and excited to get to work.
He had been thinking about it for a couple months.
The program wanted him to work out with the players and see what he thought.
But Sumlin was not satisfied with just being able to get the workout and go.
He was excited about how the program was growing, and he wanted to do more than just work out for the players.
“The coaches wanted me to work with them and be around them,” he said.
“They wanted to be part of it.
They wanted to see the program I was coming to.
So, that was an exciting part for me.”
After that first workout, Sumlen got a call from his recruiter.
He took the call from a guy named Matt.
Matt told Sumlin he had been in contact with a high-ranking coach at Tennessee State.
The two talked for a while and Sumlen was ready to make the jump to Tennessee.
“I thought that was great,” Sumlen said.
“He’s a coach that I would have been happy to work for, and that’s something that I was looking forward to,” he added.
“That was great to hear from someone I would be in contact, and I’m very appreciative of that.”
“It was really cool, I couldn’t be more excited,” said Tennessee Elite player Chris Taylor.
“I’m very happy to be here.
I love the program and I want to be able to help this program be successful.”
Sumlin says it’s a rare occurrence for a Tennessee student to succeed as a head coach and that he is very excited about the prospect.
“It’s not something you see often, but it happens, and it’s something you can be proud of,” he explained.
“When you have a chance to make a positive impact on somebody, it shows a lot of maturity.
You want to have it be positive, and if that’s the case, that’s a good thing.”
The Tennessee Elite program is the second Tennessee program to join the ranks of the SEC and one of the highest-rated programs in the nation.
Tennessee was ranked No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25 and No. 10 in the coaches poll.
The school is also one of four schools to win the SEC West, and has won four straight games since the beginning of the season.
